La banda està formada per cinc components, tots nois, anomenats: Harry (Edward) Styles, Liam (James) Payne, Niall (James) Horan, Louis (William) Tomlinson i Zain (Javadd) Malik, més conegut amb el nom de "Zayn".
La formació del grup va ser després de que els cinc membres audicionessin i fossin expulsats del programa. Desprès d'això, un dels jutges del programa, va proposar que tots cinc junts formessin un grup, al qual més tard seria anomenat "One Direction".
A mitjans de 2011 van llançar el seu primer senzill, "What Makes You Beautiful" i més tard, "Gotta Be You", "One Thing" i "More Than This" del seu àlbum "Up All Night".

Al 2012 van llançar els senzills: "Live While We're Young", "Little Things" i "Kiss You", junt amb el seu nou àlbum "Take Me Home".

EliminaTambé hi han algunes, que estan escrites per altre gent, com "Moments" en la que hi va participar Ed Sheeran. ;)
